COMMUNITIES ::

The communities we serve

Youth for Social Development is working in the state of Orissa by giving more emphasis on the tribal dominated southern part. South Orissa is also a socio-economically backward region with very poor infrastructure base. Orissa has the general characteristic of poverty (47.15% are below poverty line), low per capita income (Rs. 6,105 in 2001-02 at the 1993-94 prices), high infant mortality rate (97 per thousand as against the national rate of 71) and slow growth in industrialization. More than 60% of the population depends on agriculture. The agriculture sector is also lagging behind the all India cropping pattern with very low productivity and cropping intensity. This part of Orissa and the communities living are far from getting basic services like health care facilities, education and other basic services like drinking water, sanitation and other civic services.

The communities those are most deprived and vulnerable who are not been able to raise their voices to get their rights which they entitled to get. The population at a large in Orissa (and particularly in Ganjam District) are predominantly the poor and deprived such as people living Below Poverty Line (BPL), Scheduled Tribes (ST’s), Scheduled Casts (SC’s) and Other Backward Class (OBC’s) and the likes.
